East or West of the Turnpike: What Your Miramar Home's Locks Need

Updated: November 2026

If your Miramar home is east of the Turnpike, its locks are more likely to need replacing; if it's west, a rekey or a smart-lock reset is usually enough. The reason is age: the east side has been largely built out since the mid-1960s (City of Miramar), while across the city the median house or condo was built in 1994 (City-Data).

East of the Turnpike: what to check

  1. Does the deadbolt throw without pushing the door? If not, the door has moved; adjusting the strike may fix it.
  2. Are the locks all the same brand? Mixed brands mean mixed keys.
  3. Is there a deadbolt on every exterior door, including the side and garage doors?
  4. Is the lock face pitted or loose? Replace rather than rekey (from $145).

West of the Turnpike: what to check

  1. Who had keys during construction or the last sale? Rekey ($234 for four locks).
  2. Smart lock codes and app users — wipe and reset (smart & builder locks).
  3. Pool gate and pool door — do they close and latch by themselves? (pool latches)
  4. Your gate access — is your name on the HOA's guest system for when you need a locksmith?
